After 22 years of extinction in the wild, on 11 June 2022 the Spix’s Macaw is finally returning home – a world first.
You can own a part of this historic event.
The beautiful Spix’s Macaw has been extinct in the wild since 2000 due to illegal trade, hunting and the destruction of its natural habitat. On 11 June 2022, it will become the first-ever species to be “unextinct” following a 22-year breeding programme, when the first eight birds will be released into their ancestral home: the Brazilian Caatinga.
This unique and special moment will be immortalized through the launch of the UNEXTINCT NFT project, a collection of exclusive digital artworks designed by award-winning and world-renowned wildlife photographer Tim Flach. The collection will be released on 11th June 6:30PM ET or 11:30 GMT, 00:30 CET respectively.
Award-winning artist Tim Flach and his team has traveled across Europe by van to capture the Spix’s Macaw at the ACTP e.V. breeding facility near Berlin. Before setting off, the team had spent an entire weekend constructing a specialized aviary designed to encourage the birds to fly in a circular motion – enabling the team to capture the rare beauty of the Spix’s Macaw in a way that has never been seen before. The end result is a collection of awe-inspiring works that tell a story of resilience, liberation and freedom.
Nobody can predict how the Spix’s will behave when released into the wild. Will they immediately enjoy the freedom and fly far away, or will they be skeptical and take their time? Will they stay close-by because some of their mates remain in the enclosure?
Whatever happens, you will receive this unique footage as an NFT airdrop in your Nifty Gateway account.
Additionally, the Unextinct team will keep you posted and provide regular updates on the Spix’s life in freedom via our Discord channel.
The birds have small transmitters; when located in certain places, we will take photos and videos and make them exclusively available to you. We are working on many more innovative solutions to make species conservation and environmental protection even more tangible.
The exclusive UNEXTINCT community will exist on Discord and is where we will release video and photo updates of how the Spix’s Macaws are faring every two weeks.
Later this year, more Spix’s will be released and we will celebrate that with further drops, the release of other species, and innovative solutions to support global conservation efforts.
We are already talking to celebrities and high profile NFT artists who want to support our project and be a part of it.
The next drop will feature several new artists and different styles – sign up to discover more about how we will reward collectors with benefits across both the virtual and physical worlds.
Meet Tim Flach in person and learn all about the process he employs to create his visually stunning artwork.
As a long-time expert in species conservation, Tim will share his experiences and knowledge with you over a private lunch with other Masterpiece NFT collectors.
For every NFT artwork sold, one tree will be planted in the Caatinga. If over 4,000 are sold, two trees will be planted for each purchase.
The Spix’s Macaws live in an arid region in Brazil called the Caatinga. Today their natural habitat is one of few trees, scrub and dry bushes. Due to the large influence of humans on this area, large parts of the Caatinga have been permanently damaged.
For more than 10 years, projects have been underway to restore the Caatinga and thus the habitat of the Spix’s Macaw. In an arid area like the Caatinga, such reforestation efforts are particularly challenging.
This is in part because – unlike more humid areas – the Caatinga requires especially robust and sturdy tree saplings which are more costly and difficult to cultivate than regular saplings.
Adding new trees to the Caatinga therefore has a massive effect on the area and the natural habitat of the Spix’s Macaw, for which we feel personally responsible.
The goal of UNEXTINCT is to remove the Spix’s Macaw from the “red list of endangered species” and re-establish a wild population.
Come and join us on our historic journey!

UNEXTINCT is incredibly proud and privileged to announce our collaboration with Tim Flach, a conservationist, and photographer whose work has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, The Guardian and New Scientist.
Tim has sold his artwork at major auction houses including Christie’s and has lectured on conservation at Oxford University. He is the President of the Association of Photographers, holds an Honorary Fellowship from the British Institute of Professional Photography and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Arts, one of the world’s leading artistic institutions.
Tim has specifically released portfolios and publications on endangered species – particularly birds – and has a personal passion for the Spix’s Macaw. He is extremely revered in his field, has exhibited globally and has previously sold a single photograph for over $50,000. Some of his stunning artwork is exhibited on his Instagram page, where he has garnered over 150,000 followers.
For UNEXTINCT, Tim and his team are personally flying out to capture the Spix’s Macaws in their enclosures. Tim will produce a collection of awe-inspiring photographs, which will each be converted into non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on a carbon-negative platform. Join our Discord community or follow us on Twitter for the latest project updates, including when and where the NFTs will be available to purchase.

UNEXTINCT is a collaboration between four organisations:
BlueSky Global is a climate project developer headquartered in Berlin, Germany. BlueSky focuses on the sourcing, development, and execution of nature-based emission reduction projects, mainly avoided deforestation and afforestation. Today BlueSky has acquired roughly 1 million hectares of land, which are currently being certified to generate carbon offsetting credits.
ACTP e.V. (Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots e.V.) is a registered non-profit organisation based in Germany. We dedicate our work to the protection and conservation of endangered parrots and their habitats.
Atlas is a global Web3.0 platform that enables borderless participation in projects defining human history. We believe that completely unconnected groups and individuals who care deeply about a major social or environmental mission should be able to contribute to it, regardless of physical, financial or bureaucratic barriers.
25K Media is an international brand-building agency that puts a great storyline at the center of your marketing activities. Customers don’t fall in love with features but with what your brand represents in their hearts and inspires them to dream.

The NFTs will be launched on Nifty Gateway, a curated NFT marketplace. The drop is currently scheduled for 11th June 2022 at 6:30 PM ET (11:30 GMT / 00:30 CET).
See the Nifty collection here
You can purchase NFTs on Nifty Gateway with either ETH (a cryptocurrency) or by using a credit card. If you choose to pay by credit card, you don’t need a digital wallet.
Your NFT will be stored in your secure Nifty Gateway wallet. Simply log into your account, navigate to your dashboard and you’ll be able to see your NFT under ‘purchases’. You may export your NFT to an external wallet (like Metamask) if you like.
Absolutely. There are myriad possible utilities that come with owning an UNEXTINCT NFT. Depending on which artwork you purchase, these may include:
We will announce which NFTs will grant certain benefits via Twitter and Discord 48h before the drop.
The UNEXTINCT NFT collection will be minted on the Ethereum blockchain on Nifty Gateway. Nifty Gateway’s innovative smart contract is built to carry out just a single transaction for every ‘type’ of NFT minted. For UNEXTINCT, this will equate to just two transactions, which will release approximately 250kg of carbon. The UNEXTINCT team will fund the direct-from-air capture of 500kg of carbon via ClimeWorks, making this project carbon-negative.
50% of this drop’s funds will go directly to the ACTP e.v. for their continued conservation efforts of the Spix’s Macaw as well as other endangered parrots.
15% of the funds will be set aside for Unextinct’s next drop.
15% will be paid to Nifty for their help in promoting and managing the drop.
10% will go to Bluesky Global to pay for past expenses with the Unextinct project.
5% will go to our amazing artist Tim Flach whom we couldn’t have done it without.
5% will go to Atlas Labs which were instrumental to even getting us this far. Thank you 🙂
